Prophylactic drainage of anastomosis in colorectal surgery. Is it really necessary?

Routine prophylactic drainage in colorectal surgery has been made in order to prevent or minimize the consequences of anastomotic dehiscence. However, no evidence was found to show any difference between drainage or not of intra-peritoneal anastomosis. The results of a meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials will be presented and  critical aspects will be discussed.
