W38 - Critical appraisal in qualitative evidence synthesis

    Local: Genova room
    Participants:

This workshop is given on behalf of the Qualitative Research Methods Group (QRMG).

    Workshop type: Discussion.

Objective: To consider arguments for and against critical appraisal in qualitative evidence synthesis.

    Summary:
The QRMG is not as yet able to provide formal guidance as to whether to appraise studies or not, or – if studies are appraised – when to undertake the appraisal in the systematic review process.  This is an evolving field and QRMG members are actively involved in contributing to knowledge and practice in this area. The QRMG however feel that it is important to consider and debate the arguments for and against critical appraisal in qualitative evidence synthesis.

This workshop will consist of three short presentations and open discussion:
    Introduction (J. Harris)
    • Why critically appraising qualitative studies as part of qualitative evidence synth esis should be supported (C. Lockwood)
    • Why critically appraising qualitative studies as part of qualitative evidence synthesis should be NOT supported (A. Pearson)
    • Discussion (J. Harris).

Intended audience: Review authors interested in qualitative evidence synthesis.

Technical level expected of participants: Intermediate.
