W47 - Web-based training for Cochrane authors: developments in the UK

    Local: Bordeaux room
    Participants:

    Workshop type: Discussion.

Objective: To (i) share and demonstrate the developments of the online review training pilot project to date; (ii) share experiences between participants and obtain feedback on a sample of the material to inform improvement of the web-based training programme; and (iii) promote discussion on the learning needs of review authors and the requirements (applicability) of a web-based training programme.

    Summary:
Providing appropriate educational support to new review authors is an important component in the creation of high quality systematic reviews. With the ever growing number of Cochrane reviews and new pedagogical technologies available, different ways to deliver training need to be explored.  In addition, experienced review authors wishing to update their reviews or address new procedures in undertaking Cochrane reviews may benefit from focused, flexible, interactive and pedagogically so und training support.

The UK Cochrane Centre (UKCC) and the University of Portsmouth (UoP) have initiated a collaborative project to enhance learning opportunities for Cochrane review authors. The project involves developing an interactive resource that complements The Cochrane Handbook and face-to-face workshops. The program uses content-management software to create an on-line teaching and learning environment in order to:
    • Provide a blended learning environment through development of interactive electronic resources incorporating interactive scenarios, quizzes, and mechanisms for self-assessment
    • Improve the equality of access to and availability of learning resources for review authors
    • Monitor participants’ frequency of use, preferences, and satisfaction with the on-line materials
    • Implement a validated online assessment of knowledge, skills, and confidence in systematic review methods in order to enhance training

During this workshop there wil l be a demonstration of the web-based learning project including video/animated presentations and the interactive exercises developed. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss the project and consider how to assess and build authors’ confidence in undertaking a Cochrane review. Throughout, participants will be invited to discuss common issues in training for Cochrane review authors and specific learning needs that should be addressed. Additionally, discussion and debate will be encouraged on the strengths and difficulties of using internet based training and how it may be best incorporated with current Cochrane training and support, to enhance the quality and completion rate of Cochrane reviews.

[This project has received funding from the University of Portsmouth ExPERT Centre and the Opportunities Fund of The Cochrane Collaboration.]

Intended audience: Anyone involved in Cochrane reviews who is interested in sharing experiences and learning needs, including (i) people who support review authors; (ii) consumers; (iii) review authors.

Technical level expected of participants: Basic.
